Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of Performing Arts Educators of Canada. The following information is with regards to membership qualifications and the process in which membership status may be obtained.
How to Join

Associate members must be at least 18 years of age and have taught in an assistant/student teacher position for a minimum of one year.
Full members must be at least 21 years of age and have a minimum two years in a responsible teaching position.
Process of Membership
- Membership application form, administration fee and resumes must be submitted to PAEC.
- PAEC Executive Board shall have final approval on all membership requests.
Membership may be granted in the following manner:
- Membership applicant is required to complete a membership examination.
- Membership may be granted, at the discretion of the Executive Board, by other means of examining and/or distinguished applicant request.
Membership examination can now be done by video, which will be reviewed by 2 examiners. The oral portion of the exam can is then done by video conferencing. Please contact the office for more information.
What Members Shall Receive
All applicants granted membership status shall receive:
- Membership certificate
- Membership card
- Syllabus of Membership discipline
- Constitutions and Bylaws
- SOCAN Membership
What is SOCAN? In brief, SOCAN is a royalty fee paid for the use of music material. The monies collected shall be proportionately distributed to the individuals who write the words and compose the music that we use to help us earn an income. SOCAN looks after the original composers of the piece of music, who may or may not be the recording artist.
SOCAN fees are inclusive in the PAEC Annual Membership fee. A Member under the following conditions may waive the SOCAN fee:
- Inactive status from teaching
- Member holds a tariff 19 license
- Member does not use Canadian Artists music.
A waiver form must be filled out and submitted to PAEC for exemption to apply.
When You May Apply
Teachers may apply at any time for membership status by forwarding the appropriate forms, information and fees. All applicants shall be subject to a membership examination unless applying as a Distinguished Applicant in accordance to the Constitution and Bylaws or by other means of an examination process approved by the Executive Board. Each discipline shall have examination requirements. A Membership Examination Requirement form must be obtained from PAEC in order for the applicant to prepare for their examination.
Membership Examinations shall be scheduled through the Examination Board with the approval of the Executive Board. Applicants shall be notified once the process has been completed. To apply for a membership examination the teacher must forward to PAEC the following information:
- Membership application form
- Resume
- Application/administration fee
- Examination fees required
All forms and monies must be received by PAEC no later than 4 weeks prior to the scheduled examination date in order for candidate to be registered for the examination. Candidates must be fully prepared for their examination in accordance to the Membership Examination Requirement form.
Annual Membership Fees: $200.00 (SOCAN included)
